What We Offer
We make sense of our lives through stories. Stories about who we are, what happened to us, why someone behaved the way they did, what is possible, and what will probably happen next. Some of these stories come from our own experiences. Others have been passed to us through our families, cultures, communities, and the world around us. Over time, we may become so familiar with them that we no longer experience them as stories. They simply become reality as we know it.
Yet every story creates a particular way of looking at ourselves, others and the world in general. It brings some things into focus while leaving others outside the frame. Like a reflection on water, what we see may contain something real while also being shaped by the surface through which we are looking. A story doesn't have to be false to limit what else we are able to perceive. Sometimes even a story that has served us well can become too small for what is now possible.
This practice creates an opportunity to take a familiar story and loosen your attachment to it for a moment.
You don't need to decide that it is wrong, replace it with a more positive story, or convince yourself to believe something different.
Instead, you will give other perspectives a place and become curious about what else might become visible when the story you know is no longer the only opening through which you look.
